kuniyoshi's uchiwa-e : cats, kabuki and lively girls : utagawa kuniyoshi's fan paintings

 Ōta Memorial Museum of Art

1 june - 28 july 2024

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is an ukiyo-e artist active in a wide variety of genres, and is popular among modern people. His work has been introduced in various ways, but this exhibition will be the first to feature Kuniyoshi's fan paintings alone. Fans were a necessity for Edokko to beat the summer heat, but they were also a fashionable item that people enjoyed for its design, and were important kabuki-related goods. The ukiyo-e prints used to make these fans, or fan paintings, were also very popular, and Kuniyoshi himself was an active artist in them. As fans are a consumable item, there are only a few left, but this exhibition will introduce 220 pieces, including about 100 works that will be exhibited for the first time. Please enjoy the refreshing, visually pleasing, and unknown world of Kuniyoshi's fan paintings... [continue reading : http://www.ukiyoe-ota-muse.jp/uchiwa/]

Portrait and Moon

27 april - 9 june 2024

Kyoto Ba Gallery

The portrait works are the embodiment of my encounters with others in the real world . By having real and attractive artists serve as models, they have gone beyond being merely works of art and have become special entities similar to the personal substitutes . The lawless "dolls" have acquired a dignity that must be protected . The dialogues I have had during the production period have become a treasure in my life. On the other hand, the small ceramic sculptures and "dolls" such as ball-jointed dolls are unfamiliar faces born defenselessly from the materials and hands. Like the moon that follows you wherever you go when you look up at it on a dark road, dolls have always been with human history. In astrology, the "moon" represents the unconscious self, habits , and memories of the past. It is paired with the "sun," which symbolizes the power of the conscious individual. The title "Portrait" of this work refers to the portrait works, which are both me and others , and likens the freer small doll sculptures to the "moon." I intend to leave my personal memories, which will one day disappear, as a mystery in the portraits and dolls .

"In response to the 60th Venice Biennale on the theme of “strangers everywhere,” curated by general commissioner Adriano Pedrosa, we wanted to bring together within the gallery the same exceptional quartet of artists: Aloïse Corbaz, Madge Gill, Leopold Strobl, and Anna Zemánková. The little venice exhibition brings together more than thirty works, most of which are being presented to the public for the first time. This unprecedented exhibition allows the genius of these leading artists—defended by the gallery for nearly 20 years in some cases—to engage in intimate dialogue"

discover how artists working between the 1960s and the 1990s opened up new spaces for participation

Action – both individual and collective – is at the heart of the works within this display. Sometimes the work takes the form of a proposal for an action or the record of a past event or performance. Elsewhere viewers are invited to activate an artwork using their bodies. Artworks shown here include a mix of intimate individual acts, choreographed actions in which participants are directed by an artist and political activism.
