kuniyoshi's uchiwa-e : cats, kabuki and lively girls : utagawa kuniyoshi's fan paintings

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is an ukiyo-e artist active in a wide variety of genres, and is popular among modern people. His work has been introduced in various ways, but this exhibition will be the first to feature Kuniyoshi's fan paintings alone. Fans were a necessity for Edokko to beat the summer heat, but they were also a fashionable item that people enjoyed for its design, and were important kabuki-related goods. The ukiyo-e prints used to make these fans, or fan paintings, were also very popular, and Kuniyoshi himself was an active artist in them. As fans are a consumable item, there are only a few left, but this exhibition will introduce 220 pieces, including about 100 works that will be exhibited for the first time.
